Different Types of Plastics and its Properties

In spite of so much hullabaloo going on about the ban on plastics, plastics industry will always be a booming industry. And we’ve different type of plastics which can be recycled and they in turn can be used for numerous uses.

The different types of plastics are:

  1. PET: The full form of PET is Polyethylene Terephthalate. It is the most general thermoplastic polymer resin which belongs to the polyester family. It is applicable in the fibers for clothing, for foods and liquids.

It can be identified by observing some properties like it are clear, tough and softens at the temperature of 80° C. After recycling, the PET recycled can be used in carpet, clothing, protective packaging, tennis ball, etc.

On an average, a U.S. household use 45 pounds of PET plastic bottles and jars in a complete year.  If they were recycled, it would produce enough recycled PET fiber to make 12 dozen men’s T-shirts.

  1. HDPE: The full form of HDPE is High-density polyethylene. It is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from the petroleum and also referred to as polyethylene high-density in short PEPD.

When using for pipes, it is even referred to alkathene or polythene. Its properties are it can coloured easily, softens at a temperature of 75° C.

The recycled HDPE can be used for manufacturing automobile parts, buckets, crates, lawn and garden products and office products.

  1. PVC: The full form of PVC is Polyvinyl Chloride. It is third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, subsequent to polyethylene and polypropylene globally.

They’re of again 2 kinds namely PVC-U and PVC-P. The full form of PVC-U is Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride and PVC-P is Plasticised Polyvinyl Chloride respectively.

The properties of PVC-U are tough, strong, and soften at a temperature of 80° C whereas PVC-P is flexible and clear. The recycled PVC can be recycled around seven times and has a lifespan of approximately 140 years.

  1. LDPE: The full form of LDPE is low-density polyethylene.  It is a thermoplastic which is made from the monomer ethylene.

Soft, flexible softening at a temperature of 70° C are few of the properties of LDPE. The recycled LDPE is used for landscaping boards, floor tiles, garbage can liners, etc.

  1. PP: The full form of PP is Polypropylene and it is a recyclable thermoplastic polymer.

Hard, waxy surface and softening at a temperature of 140° C are some of its properties.

  1. PS: PS is a synthetic aromatic polymer which is made from the monomer styrene. The full form of PS is Polystyrene which can be either solid or foamed.

One more kind of PS is PS-E. The PS is amorphous, glassy polymer which is generally rigid and relatively reasonable.

So these are the different types of plastics and its products after being recycled.
